Court Declares Reuters Messaging May No Longer Use FaceTime Technology

BELMONT, CA, Jul 29, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) ----The UnitedStates District Court for the Southern District of New York todayentered judgment in favor of FaceTime Communications, Inc. in acontract dispute with Thomson Reuters Inc. over Reuters' use ofFaceTime's intellectual property. According to the court, ThomsonReuters must cease use of FaceTime technology effective August 1,2008. Since 2006 FaceTime technology has been used in a componentof the Reuters Messaging Network that provides instant messagingcompliance for its financial customers.
Many financial institutions rely on the Reuters MessagingCompliance Manager to ensure compliance with SEC and Sarbanes-Oxleyregulations for logging, archiving and retrieval of electroniccommunications regarding financial transactions. Reuters has notrenewed its license with FaceTime following its expiration onJanuary 31, 2008. After efforts to renegotiate the contract failed,FaceTime filed suit against Reuters to protect its intellectualproperty rights.
"While we are pleased that FaceTime's intellectual property rightsare protected, we are concerned about Reuters' timetable forinstalling replacement technology in light of its representationsto the court as to its ability to provide adequate complianceprotection for its customers," said Kailash Ambwani, president andCEO of FaceTime Communications. Ambwani elaborates on theFaceForward blog.
Concern over timing of the technology change is based on Reuters'representations to the court in the lawsuit. Reuters' pleadings, filed earlier this month, state:

Etymotic Research hf2 iPhone Stereo Headset

When it comes to noise isolating earphones, Etymotic Research is upthere with the best. If you're looking to buy a set of earphonesthat will significantly improve the audio experience from yourplayer, then Etymotic should definitely be on your short list, along with Shure, Ultimate Ears and going by recent form, Klipschtoo. But this particular set of Etymotic earphones, has a neattrick up its sleeve. You see the hf2s aren't just earphones, they're actually a complete hands free solution for anyone thatuses their iPhone as their music player.
The problem with having a separate MP3 player and phone, is thatwhen you're listening to your music, you miss all your phone calls. This was a problem that I encountered regularly when I waswandering around London attending Press events - obviously I didn'twant to walk the streets without music, but the result was aplethora of missed calls when I arrived. That all changed when Ipicked up an
iPhone
last summer, and started to use it as both my MP3 player andphone. From that point on I could listen to my music, while safe inthe knowledge that if my phone rang, I'd know about it.
The transition to using my iPhone as my music player was madecomplete when Shure released its
Mobile Phone Adapter
, which allowed me to use my
E500 earphones
with my iPhone, while also giving me full hands freefunctionality. Now, great as this solution is for anyone who hasShure earphones already, it's not the most elegant solution, and ifyou are looking for a decent set of earphones and hands freefunctionality, an all in one solution could be a better bet.
There are, of course, several earphone/hands free solutionsavailable for the iPhone, including the woefully poor set thatcomes in the box. However, if you wanted to seriously improve youraudio experience, your options were limited, to say the least. Andthis is where Etymotic comes in with the hf2s - Etymotic'sreputation speaks for itself in the sound quality department, whilethe design team has also clearly worked overtime to create aproduct that's as unobtrusive as possible, without compromising theaudio.
The hf2s remind me of the
Etymotic ER.4 microPro
earphones that I reviewed a couple of years ago. The singlearmature drivers employed by the hf2s allow for a very slim andlightweight design, much like the ER.4s and, in fact, the recentlyreviewed
Klipsch Images
. However, the hf2s aren't quite as comfortable as the Images, andyou can definitely feel that you have them in your ears - but thenthe Images are just ridiculously light and comfortable.
