Pick of the Week - Francesca Battistelli's My Paper Heart
I don't know what I expected from newcomer Francesca Battistelli, but for sure, it wasn't what I got when I popped her debut CD
My Paper Heart
into my stereo.
I thought maybe I'd get an earful of dance drivel or cookie cutterpop. Instead, I got bluesy piano-driven rock and smoky vocals froman artist with something to say.
From the first beat of the opening track, "Free to Be Me" to thefunky title cut to the bouncy "Blue Sky" Battistelli belts outsongs about hope and faith with sincerity, maturity and energy.
What I love is that the songs aren't preachy; any fan of artistslike Nora Jones or Corinne Bailey Rae could give the CD a spin andfind something to like. "Someday Soon," for example, is a soulfullove song about someday meeting her soul mate, but without theobligatory, sappy "I'll wait for you" lyrics.
Battistelli comes from a musical family. Her father was theassistant conductor for the traveling production of "The King andI;" her mom played the part of Anna, opposite Yul Brenner. Afterseeing a Broadway production of "The Secret Garden" young Francescanew that her life would revolve around music.
The first single from the album, "I'm Letting Go," currently sitsat #3 on Billboards Hot Christian Songs and #4 on the Hot ChristianAdult Contemporary chart. Over at Radio & Records, the song is #4on Christian Adult Contemporary chart and #3 on the Christian CHRchart.
In other words, if you're listening to Christian radio, you'veheard Francesca Battistelli.
So don't wait another minute.
Head over to her website
or her
MySpace page
to check out some music and learn more about this hot new artist.
The label is so sure that you'll love her album, which is priced atan easy to swallow $9.99 (and her website boasts an $8.99 price tagat Target), that if you don't like it you can return it. That's adeal you can't pass up.

Sound Advice: Canon camcorders offer good high-def recording
I want to buy a high-def camcorder and like the idea of memorycard or hard drive convenience, but it seems you always recommendthat people stick with tape. Is this still what you recommend, andwhy?
Mike MannasPittsburgh
Until recently memory-based AVCHD camcorders could not match theimage quality of tape-based HDV camcorders, which kept me fromrecommending them. That's no longer the case with two great newCanon models, but you still must tread carefully if choosing AVCHD.
Canon's HF10 and HF100 AVCHD camcorders record on SDHC cards, fitting approximately 30 minutes of high-definition footage on a4GB card. They are identical save for the HF10's black finish and16GB of internal memory. I recommend using 4GB cards because youcan burn the contents of an entire card on a DVD, which makesarchiving easy.
I tested the HF10 recently and was wowed by it. It's lightweightyet solid, has long battery life and uses optical imagestabilization for steady images. There's no intruding tape motornoise and reviewing and deleting clips was a snap. A drawback is ithas no viewfinder, so you must compose images solely with the LCDscreen.
Compared with my Canon HV20, an HDV camcorder considered to be thebest high-definition consumer camcorder available last year, I wassurprised to find that in almost every instance I preferred theHF10's video. It looked sharper, cleaner and more colorful. Every
